# Puppy Training Made Simple: Six Things to Teach First

Your puppy already knows one thing by heart: the sound of the fridge door opening. So yes, they can learn. You just need to show them what you want.

## Start early, keep it fun

Your puppy’s first few months are an important time for learning and socialisation. Positive experiences with new people, places, sounds and everyday routines can help build confidence as they grow.

A few simple rules make training easier:

- **Reward the good stuff.** Praise and treats work far better than telling off.
- **Keep it short.** A few minutes at a time is plenty. Puppies get tired quickly.
- **Be quick.** Reward the second they get it right, so they know what they did well.
- **Finish on a win.** End with something easy so you both feel good.

## Six things to teach first

1. **Their name** Say their name once in a happy voice. When they look at you, give a treat. Practise in different rooms.
2. **Sit** Hold a treat near their nose and slowly move it up and over their head. Their bottom will lower on its own. Reward straight away. Once they get it, add the word "sit".
3. **Come** Start indoors, a few steps away. Call them happily and step back. Make a big fuss when they reach you. Never call them over for something they won't like, like a bath.
4. **Leave it** Hold a treat in a closed hand. Let them sniff and nudge. The moment they give up and look away, reward them with a treat from your other hand.
5. **Settle** Put a mat on the floor. Reward them for stepping on it, then for lying down on it. Slowly reward them for staying calm there a little longer. Great for hot afternoons indoors.
6. **Toilet training** Take them outside after they wake up, eat and play. Go to the same spot and wait quietly. Praise and reward as soon as they go. If there's an accident inside, clean it up calmly. No telling off.

## Meeting the world

Ask your vet when it’s safe for your puppy to start classes and explore new environments. You may not need to wait until their full vaccination course is complete, but your vet can advise you based on their vaccination status and local disease risk. It’s also worth checking with the training facility or trainer you plan to use, as they may have their own vaccination requirements before your puppy can attend.

## Training in the UAE heat

Hot days make it harder for puppies to focus, and they can overheat quickly. Flat-faced breeds, like pugs and French bulldogs, need extra care.

- Train indoors, or early in the morning and in the evening.
- Check the pavement with the back of your hand. Too hot for you means too hot for paws.
- Keep fresh water nearby before, during and after training.
- If your puppy is panting heavily, drooling a lot or seems wobbly or very tired, move them somewhere cool and call your vet straight away.

## Make rewards part of their routine

 Training rewards don’t always have to mean extra treats. You can use a little of your puppy’s regular food during training, or save something special for the end of a session.

A suitable topper can also work as a simple post-training reward:

- On a lick mat. Spread a thin layer on and let them lick.
- As a frozen treat. Spoon a little into an ice cube tray or silicone mould and freeze.
- Straight from a spoon. Simple and quick.

## Same time tomorrow?

You don't need long lessons or a perfect puppy. A few minutes a day, plenty of patience and lots of praise will get you further than you think. Before long, they'll come running for your voice the way they do for the fridge door.
