You spent ages choosing the perfect cat bed. Soft, cosy, just the right size. Then a parcel arrived, and the bed has not been touched since.

If your cat climbs into a box the moment it hits the floor, you are in very good company. I have lost count of the times a lovely new bed has been ignored in favour of the box it came in. It is one of the most familiar sights in any cat household, and it is not random.

Cats don’t choose their spaces the way we do. They choose carefully, and usually for a reason.

## A hiding spot with a view

Cats are natural hunters, but they are also small animals that like to stay out of sight while they take in their surroundings. A box offers both. The walls cover them on most sides, while the open top gives them a clear view of everything going on. They can watch without being watched, which is exactly how most cats like it.

## Small spaces feel safe

When the house gets busy with guests, new furniture or a noisy day, many cats look for somewhere enclosed to retreat to. A box gives them a quiet corner where they can settle and observe at their own pace. It is less about hiding from you and more about having a space that feels like theirs.

You may notice your cat squeezing into a box that looks far too small for them. That snug fit seems to be part of the appeal. The tighter the space, the more tucked in and secure it feels.

## Boxes hold warmth

Cats generally enjoy warmer temperatures than we do, which is why you will find them stretched out in patches of sunlight. Cardboard holds on to body heat, turning a simple box into a cosy little pocket.

Here in the UAE, where the air conditioning runs for much of the year, a box can easily be the warmest spot in the room. No wonder it is so popular.

## Everything new is worth investigating

A delivery box arrives carrying unfamiliar smells from the outside world. To a curious cat, that is an invitation. Sniffing it, rubbing their cheeks along the edges and finally stepping inside is how many cats explore something new and make it part of their territory. By the time they settle in, the box smells a little more like them.

## The perfect place to plan a pounce

Watch a cat in a box for long enough and you may spot the signs: a twitch of the tail, wide eyes, a little wiggle, then a sudden leap at a passing toy or foot. A box makes an ideal hunting hide. Playing this way lets cats act out their natural stalk and pounce instinct, safely, from the comfort of the living room floor.

## How to make box time safe and fun

Boxes are one of the simplest and most affordable ways to keep an indoor cat engaged. A few small steps make them even better:

- Remove tape, staples, plastic, string and handles before handing a box over.
- Choose sturdy boxes that won’t collapse when your cat jumps in or out.
- Place it somewhere quiet, ideally near a window or slightly raised so they can watch the room.
- Add a soft blanket or an old t-shirt that smells like you.
- Cut a second doorway or a small peephole to turn it into a hideout.
- Rotate boxes now and then to keep things interesting, and recycle any that are worn or damp.
- Let your cat decide when to go in and when to come out. Never lift or close a box while they are inside.

## Working with their instincts

Box love is a small reminder that cats experience the world on their own terms. They are drawn to what feels safe, warm and familiar, and they notice the details we often miss.

The same is true at mealtimes. Smell, texture and freshness all shape whether a cat decides something is worth trying. That is the thinking behind Wundercat: fresh, gently cooked meals made with high animal protein and naturally rich in moisture, with a variety of proteins to explore so your cat can choose what they love.

So next time a parcel arrives, let them have the box. And if you would like to see what else they choose, start with a taster pack.

Is it normal for my cat to prefer a box over their bed?

Completely normal. A box offers cover, warmth and a good view, which many cats find more appealing than an open bed. Some guardians place a cat bed inside a box to get the best of both.

Are cardboard boxes safe for cats?

Generally, yes. Remove any tape, staples, plastic and handles first. If your cat likes to chew cardboard, keep an eye on them and swap the box out once it starts to fall apart.

Why does my cat squeeze into boxes that are too small?

A snug space feels tucked in and secure, so a tight fit is often part of the attraction rather than a problem.

Do kittens and older cats both enjoy boxes?

Yes. Box love tends to last a lifetime. Kittens often use boxes for play and pouncing, while older cats may prefer a box as a warm, quiet resting spot. A lower box with an easy way in suits cats who are less keen on jumping.
