# [Natural Puppy Food: What Your Puppy Needs](https://blog.mywunderdog.com/insights/natural-puppy-food)

Most puppies do the bulk of their growing in their first year.

In those months, they build bone, muscle, a working immune system and a digestive system that will carry them through adult life. Everything they need for that comes from their bowl.

That's why so many new guardians start searching for natural puppy food. They want to feed something real, simple and easy to trust.

Here's what to look for, and how fresh, gently cooked meals fit into a growing puppy's life.

## What does "natural puppy food" actually mean?

"Natural" is one of the most used words in pet food marketing. On its own, it tells you very little about the quality of a recipe.

Instead of relying on the word, look at three things:

- **The ingredient list.** Can you recognise what's in it? Named proteins such as "chicken" or "lamb" are clearer than vague terms like "meat derivatives".
- **The nutrition statement.** Look for a line saying the food is complete and balanced for growth or for all life stages. This matters more than anything on the front of the pack.
- **How it's made.** A food can start with good ingredients and still be heavily processed before it reaches the bowl.

### Is organic puppy food the same as natural or fresh?

No. "Organic" refers to how ingredients are farmed and certified. It doesn't tell you how the food is cooked, how much moisture it contains, or whether it meets your puppy's needs for growth.

A food can be organic and highly processed. A food can also be fresh and gently cooked without carrying an organic certification.

When comparing options, the nutrition statement and the ingredient list tell you far more than any single label word.

## Is puppy food necessary?

Puppies aren't simply small adult dogs. Compared with adults, they need:

- More energy for their body weight
- More protein to build muscle and tissue
- Carefully balanced minerals, especially calcium and phosphorus, to support healthy bone growth

An adult maintenance food may not provide these in the right amounts.

The good news is that the word "puppy" on the pack isn't what matters. What matters is whether the food is complete and balanced for growth.

Many pet foods are formulated to meet the AAFCO Dog Food Nutrient Profiles. A food may meet the profile for adult maintenance, for growth, or for **all life stages**. An all life stages food meets the requirements for growth, so it is suitable for puppies.

### A note for large breed puppies

Large and giant breed puppies need extra care. Their bones grow over a longer period, and too much calcium or too many calories can put strain on developing joints.

If your puppy is expected to weigh 32 kg or more as an adult, check that their food states it is suitable for the growth of large size dogs. Your vet can help you keep their growth steady.

## Can puppies eat the same fresh food as adult dogs?

Yes, as long as the recipe is formulated for all life stages.

Every Wunderdog recipe is formulated to meet the nutritional levels established by the AAFCO Dog Food Nutrient Profiles for all life stages of dogs, including the growth of large size dogs (32 kg or more as an adult).

This means a puppy and an adult dog in the same home can eat the same recipe. What changes is the portion, not the food. Our team can help you choose the right recipe for your puppy.

Treats and toppers are fine in small amounts. Keep them as extras so they don't throw off the balance of a complete diet.

## Fresh food for puppies vs kibble: what's the difference?

Both fresh food and dry food can be complete and balanced. The differences come down to moisture, processing and ingredients.

**Moisture.** Our meals contain around 70% moisture. Dry food typically contains around 10%. For a busy puppy in the UAE heat, moisture-rich meals help support daily hydration alongside fresh drinking water.

**Gentle cooking.** Our meals are gently cooked to help preserve nutrients. Dry food is usually made using high-heat processing to create a shelf-stable pellet.

**Ingredients you can recognise.** Take our [Chicken with Banana](https://mywunderdog.com/products/dog/chicken-with-banana-1kg) recipe. It's made with chicken (breast, neck, liver), pumpkin, egg, sweet potato, white rice, apple and banana. Every ingredient is human-grade and prepared in-house in the UAE.

**Easy digestion.** Many puppies have sensitive tummies, especially while settling into a new home. Highly digestible ingredients may help support comfortable digestion and consistent stools.

## How much natural puppy food should I feed my puppy each day?

There's no single answer, because every puppy is different. The right amount depends on:

- Their current age and weight
- Their expected adult size
- Their breed
- How active they are

Puppies need more energy for their size than adult dogs. Their needs also change quickly as they grow, so a portion that's right at ten weeks won't be right at six months.

### Practical tips

- **Split the day into several small meals.** Young puppies usually do best on three or four meals a day, moving to two meals as they get older. Your vet can advise on the right routine for your puppy.
- **Weigh your puppy regularly.** Steady weight gain is a good sign. Sudden jumps or stalls are worth discussing with your vet.
- **Check their body shape.** You should be able to feel their ribs easily without seeing them clearly, and see a gentle waist when you look from above.
- **Don't let them grow too fast.** This matters most for large and giant breeds, where rapid growth can strain developing joints.

With Wunderdog, each meal plan is calculated from your puppy's details and portioned for them, so you're not guessing from a generic feeding chart. As your puppy grows, keep their details up to date so their portions keep up with them.

## When should I switch from puppy food to adult food?

Puppies are ready for adult portions once their growth slows. This depends mostly on their expected adult size. As a rough guide:

- **Small breeds:** around 9 to 12 months
- **Medium breeds:** around 12 months
- **Large breeds:** around 12 to 18 months
- **Giant breeds:** up to 18 to 24 months

These are general ranges. Your vet is the best person to confirm when your puppy has finished growing.

If your puppy already eats a fresh recipe formulated for all life stages, you don't need to change their food at all. You simply adjust their portions as their energy needs settle.

If you do move from one food to another, do it gradually. If you've just brought your puppy home, keep them on their current food for the first few days while they settle.
