More Than Water: How Nutrition Helps Shelter Dogs Stay Cool in the Heat

Just like humans, dogs can suffer when temperatures rise. The signs of dehydration are not always obvious.

Common signs of heat stress or dehydration in dogs include:

  • Dry or sticky gums
  • Low energy or lethargy
  • Sunken eyes
  • Heavy or excessive panting
  • Loss of appetite or interest in play

Shelter dogs are at even greater risk. While shelters do their best with the resources they have, access to clean water, shaded spots and ventilation can sometimes be limited, especially during heatwaves. Keeping cool becomes a daily challenge.

Some breeds are more vulnerable than others. Flat-faced dogs such as bulldogs, pugs and boxers find it harder to regulate their body temperature and are more likely to experience heat stress.
