Let's go through why, and what actually helps. ## Why taurine gets extra attention here Cats can't synthesize meaningful taurine themselves, they need it directly from animal tissue in the diet, always. During pregnancy that requirement gets more serious, not less: taurine deficiency in queens has been linked to poor fetal development and reabsorption, and in some cases whole-litter loss. A queen feeding a litter can need close to two to three times her normal maintenance energy, depending on litter size, and that demand often peaks a few weeks after the kittens are born, right as they're growing fastest and she's producing milk at full tilt. This is one area where a fresh, marine-oil-rich diet has a genuine, specific advantage over a diet where those fats have been damaged by high-heat processing. ## Moisture matters even more than usual Cats already have a weak thirst drive, and a nursing queen producing milk is losing fluid constantly.
